During the last three decades, the turkey industry has come from a single-product, holiday-oriented business into a fully integrated industry with a diversified product line that competes with other protein products on a year-round basis. Turkey Consumption

Turkey consumption more than doubled since 1970, due to consumers' recognition of turkey's good taste and nutritional value.

In 2016, U.S. consumption of turkey was 16.7 pounds per person. 


In 2015, turkey was the #4 protein choice for American consumers. 


Turkey Production

Turkey Production in the United States has increased nearly 104 percent since 1970, meeting consumers' demand as more people choose turkey. With the value added to turkey through processing into a wide variety of cuts, parts and further processed products, the total value of turkey processors' production in 2011 was nearly $18 billion.






In 2016, U.S. poultry exports were 7.95 billion pounds, over 16 percent of total production.  Canada was in the top five for turkey. Mexico proved the largest single customer for U.S. poultry exports in 2016. Almost 70 percent of U.S. turkey exports go to Mexico.  Mexico imported 23.5 percent of all U.S. poultry exports, while Canada received more than 5 percent of U.S. poultry exports.
